Archaeological and Museum Conservation - Roman Baths Museum, Bath

This extensive programme of works at the museum during the 1980s and early '90s included the cleaning and conservation of the built fabric of the baths, as well as a range of museum exhibits. The Baths presented a uniquely challenging environment, due to humidity levels and the resulting continuous movement of moisture and salts through the stone. Original pavements within the baths were re-set with lime mortars designed to accurately match the original Roman mortars. Roman tombstones underwent extensive conservation with the removal of cement infill sections and replacement with ceramic armatures and lime putty mortar mixes. Cleaning of exhibits successfully enhanced their appearance and revealed more information on surface layers. We are delighted to observe that the mortar repair mixes used on the stone floors of the baths have remained sound, even after 25 years of wear and tear by visitors.
