Church Monuments - All Saints Church, Lullington, Somerset

This beautiful carved coffin lid, dating from the late 12th century had at some point been fixed into the vestry wall. During this process it had been fractured and had extensive inappropriate and potentially damaging cementitious repairs to much of the surface. The conservation programme involved removing the lid from the vestry wall and cleaning all traces of cement from the damaged sections. The lid had been previously broken into eleven pieces and it required skill and dedication to reassemble and repair this monument, using lime putty mortars to match the original colour and texture of the stone. The lid is now displayed on the nave wall, supported by two stone corbels and a stainless steel cramp.
