St John the Baptist is one of the four surviving churches from the 12th century built into the medieval city wall. Of particular interest are the sculptures of pre-Roman leaders, Brennus and Bellinus, both of which had been continually over-painted since the late 19th century. Following research into their original finish and intent, the more recent layers of paint were carefully removed from the statues to reveal the traces of historic polychrome. The statues were also sheltercoated to both protect them from the detrimental atmospheric pollution and to enhance their appearance. St. John the Baptist is now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.
