The 2006 report by English Heritage and the Institute of Conservators "Architectural Conservators Education and Training in England" highlighted the discrepancies between the needs of conservation practitioners and the practical skills of those entering the profession. The report concluded that conservation employers needed to play a greater role in the future education and training of the workforce.
Sally Strachey Historic Conservation offers on-campus workshops to schools, colleges and Universities which combine first hand case studies with practical sessions. Materials are brought in to the classroom and lecture hall and students are able to work alongside experienced craftsmen and women who have current experience of stone repair, lime techniques, sculpture conservation and decorative surface repair.
Recent sessions given to undergraduate students at the Architectural Association by Sally Strachey Historic Conservation in which the emphasis was on the investigation of different materials and their applications were very positively received. Students at this level responded enthusiastically to the opportunity to engage with hands on conservators of their own age.
